Congress on Racial Equality
C.O.R.E.
1942
(Political & Intellectual & Social)
What is it?
The CORE group focused on changing racist attitudes with a pacifist organization. Teachings of nonviolent resistance by Mahatma Gandhi greatly influenced the founders of CORE. The CORE organization started protesting publicly by having sit-ins. Local control and nationalist leadership caused tension in the beginning of the organization. CORE demonstrated its leadership with the new non-hierarchical system. The organization introduced a way to make change through a nonviolent manner. Hostility between different races was common during the time. The Montgomery bus boycott and the March on Washington are examples of unequal treatment between the white and black Americans. So the CORE organization found a way to make everyone equal. Their solution for the Montgomery bus boycott was to organize the Freedom Ride. The Freedom Ride was when a group of activist rode a bus down to the South to demolish segregation. The CORE organization had a positive effect because there is no segregation of black Americans in the United States.
The hostility towards blacks continued through history until the CORE organization shed light on the subject and brought it to the government’s attention. The Civil Rights Movement was a movement in the United States that made all blacks and white equal. CORE relates to this movement because through every one of their acts passed they focused on gaining equality between races in the United States. The CORE organization was involved in sit-ins, Brown v. Board of Education, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, the Freedom Summer project, and the 9-11 attack on the United States. “The history of the Congress of Racial Equality is essentially part of the civil rights movement in America (The History of CORE)”.
Why is it important?
The Congress of Racial Equality is important because they stood up for the black people in society and made them have equal rights. Without C.O.R.E. then light would not of been brought on all of the wrongdoings of the government and the nation and the African Americans might not have equal rights as the white people do in society today. The C.O.R.E. played an important role in gaining the rights for African Americans and stopping racism in America.
Is this progress?
C.O.R.E. shows progress in history because as a result of the program the African Americans were granted the same rights as white men during the time. Progress was shown when Americans started being able to accept African Americans for who they are which is just like everyone else in the world. When African Americans started being treated like every other white citizen the African Americans felt welcome in America and that is true progress in a country. Progress was shown when the African Americans stopped being beat up because they could not do the same things as white men.
Leading to...
The group of C.O.R.E. helped lead to the next era in history known as the Vietnam War because as the war started there were groups of African Americans fighting with the white men. The African Americans usually stayed with their cultural group anyways in fear from the previous years of violence. With the C.O.R.E. group African Americans were able to interact socially with the white men during the war time when they had to live in close quarters with their once known enemies.
