What is it?
In America there was hope and progression towards launching the first man into space through technology. However Russia was the first nation to launch a man into space and travel all the way around the earth. So the United States made their goal to be the first nation to land a man on the moon. The nation chose this to be their goal because John F. Kennedy thought that "We chose to do what is not easy in order to stretch ourselves to the most we can accomplish as a country". On May 25th, 1961 Kennedy asked for seven to nine billion dollars over the next five years to fund the space program. First there was the Project Gemini which tested the how humans are affected by long periods of space travel. On July 20th, 1969 Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin "Buzz" were the first men to land on the moon. When America became the first nation to land a man on the moon it sparked a sense of happiness around the country and pride towards their fellow citizens up in space. This helped boost the Americans spirits about the science behind the space program and helped influence Americans to have funding of the space program.
Why is it important?
The first man landing on the moon from the United States is important because it was a first in history. No other nation has sent a man to the moon and to have the United States accomplish that as one of their goals makes the country stand out as a shining star to the world. The American population has returned hope into the impossible and when the first man landed on the moon, it inspired Americans to strive for their goals even if for the time being they seemed impossibel. This is why landing the first man on the moon was important to the United States.

It was also shown when scientists learned more about outer space when the astronauts were sent up to the moon.
