The Open Door Policy
(Economic)
1899-1900
What is it?
The Open Door Policy refers to a principal of equal trading rights in China at the end of the 19th century. The word is also used to describe how other countries have equal trading rights. Control over the import areas in China had been taken over by major European powers in the late 1800's. At this stage it looked like China would be divided into the spheres of influence. The spheres of influence meant that other trading nations would have no access. The United States desired access to China for trading purposes but was unwilling to compete for territory. In 1899 and 1900 an agreement that guaranteed "equal and impartial trade with all parts of the Chinese Empire was made between Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States by John Milton Hay. This also agreed that the Chinese territorial and administrative integrity would be preserved. The United States policy toward China was known as the opend foor agreement that was still intact until the Communist regime in 1949.
Why is it important?
The Open Door Policy was important because China was and still is one of the major trading industries with the entire world including the United States. Without the policy then other countries could have taken over China and refused to trade with any other nations. Resulting in the "new" Chinese nation in power of all of the suffering poor nations. China makes almost everything in the United States which includes food, clothes, cars, electronics, appliances, and almost anything else you can think of. So without China as a trade country then your country would fall behind and would not progress with the new advancements being made overseas. This is why it is very important that the United States is able to trade with China and it is also very important that China has the United States to trade with to make the money that they earn from selling their products.
Is it progress?
This Policy is a progress because it allows the entire world to trade their goods and to stay in touch with one another. Whether it mean technology wise, fashion, resource, food, etc. Every country needs one another in order to maintain a stable world and if China was closed and off-limits to any other countries then the world would not be as great as it is today. Thanks to China we have fancy cars, video games like the Wii, oil, clothes, food and many more resources that we take for granted. So the Open Door Policy is a progress because it makes sure that every country has trading rights with China and China receives a lot of money from the countries they trade with. It has a domino effect on one another.
Leading to...
The Open Door Policy helps lead to WWI because during that time China and other countries around the world are making new advancements in technology of weapons. With the fear of another country having a more powerful weapon than yours, the first reaction other countries is to make a stronger weapon. However when a country tries to take over another with their new advancements and trade from other countries by limiting the access, a war might break out. This is how the Open Door Policy contributes to the starting of WWI.
