Who is she?
Rosie the Riveter was an American cultural icon. She represented the female workforce of WWII. Rosie the Riveter was first made up in a song in 1942 which inspired several replicates of her likeness in the following years when women were out in the workforce up until this very day. The symbols the Rosie the Riveter exhibit are strength and necessity in the world not just at home but but as part of the working society. Redd Evans created the song called Rosie the Riveter which was based off of a female assembly line worker. Many artists of the time sang the song Rosie the Riveter publicly and the song became a national hit. This was the first time women were exhibited and shown as part of a strength to the world and the working society.
Why is she important?
She is important because during the time of war just like in WWI all of the men went off to fight in the war while the women were left back at home to make a living for themselves. So there were more women workers hired than there were men and so a song of inspiration of this new change occurred. The song encouraged both young and old female workers to continue to work and it lightened their moods. Women felt proud that they were starting to become equal as men. This was the first social step that women took towards earning equality with men in the workforce.
Does she show progress?
Yes, Rosie the Riveter does show progress because way back in history women were never given jobs and they were not allowed to work. Whenever there would be a war in history all of the women had to go to work to fill in the jobs of the men to keep the economy rolling and to support their families. So Rosie the Riveter showed progress when the song sang about women working in the world because this was the first step that women took towards becoming socially equal with men during the time.
