What is it?
The transcontinental railroad was a railroad built to connect the country from the East to West. This was designed to help boost trade and transportation throughout the country. With the railroad built goods from the new farms in the West could be delivered to people in the West. Transportation would also be increased because it offered free transportation to settlers and it was a faster way to get to their destination. The transcontinental railroad was also used to transport military supplies throughout the country which proved to be faster than the previous methods of transportation. Two companies in the West fought over building the railroad. One from Sacramento California and the other from Omaha Nevada. Both companies began building the railroad and ended up meeting in Promontory Utah on May 10th, 1869. Later on the railroad was built that connected the Eastern and Western parts of the United States.
