Creation of Medicare or Medicaid
(Economic & Social)
What is it?
For people over the age of 65 there is a federal health insurance program called Medicare. This can also be available for younger people with a disability, and for people who have End-Stage Renal Disease (Kidney Failure). Different parts of the healthcare service are covered by certain parts of the insurance program. Under Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) the insurance covers any medical effort to keep the patient comfortable and stable like inpatient stay, hospice (for the elderly), a nursing home, and an at home nursing aide. Then Part B is for Medical Insurance which covers the basic doctor appointment visits, prescription medicine, and medical supplies needed. Part C of the healthcare insurance covers Medicare Advantage Plans which covers the insurance policy from part A and part B which would be operated through a different company but it will be approved by the Medicare insurance policy. Then in Part D it adds coverage to the prescription drug policy and will add to savings account plans or free prescription plans.
Why is it important?
This is important because when older people retire they become sick more often and they do not have jobs to be able and cover their medical bills. So with the government helping the elderly with their medical bills the elderly would be able to get healthcare assistance if they need it. Also their prescription medications would be covered and any emergency room visits would be all taken care of, The Medicare program offers a stress free environment for the elderly to live in while they become older and more suseptible to sickness and disease.
Is this progress?
The Medicare program is a progress in history because it allows healthcare coverage for the elderly. Since they have retired that means that they no longer work and do not earn as much money as they used to. Elderly people are more likely to get sick as they become older so the Medicare program allows the elderly to get healthcare coverage funded by the government. Progress is shown when America has learned that the elderly should be taken care of because everyone will be at that stage in life at one point and it is comforting to see that the government will be able to help take care of you.

The creation of Medicare helped lead to the next era in history known as Vietnam because in war many soldiers become wounded and a lot of men die fighting for their country. So the Medicare program comes into play when the program is extended out to soldiers who have fought in the war for their country. When a lot of soldiers return they suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The government offers these soldiers suffering government funded healthcare insurance to show the nations support for the men who fought in the war. This is how the Medicare program leads into the Vietnam War.
