Draft Dodger
(Military)
What is it?
Draft dodgers were men who did not want to go into the war so they made up excuses as to why they couldn't go into the war. Every male citizen of the United States had to sign up for the draft when they turned 18. Not all men wanted to go into the war though. Some men wanted to go to college and live the life they wanted to live and choose instead of having the government tell them what they were going to do. There was a song called 'Feel Like I'm Fixing to Die' by Country Joe and the Fish that was very popular during the time. It was a song that gave all of the reasons why parents should not let their children go into the war. Some excuses were 'You can be the first ones on your block to have your son come home in a box.' That was meant to scare the families and to make them stand up against the draft. Some men who dodged the draft themselves said that they were not tall enough, had a lost limb, had a disability, was gay, and anything they could think of as a reason why the military would not want them to join the military.
Why is it important?
Draft dodgers are important to history because they show how not every man in the war wanted to go into the war in the first place. This showed that people had no choice as to if they did or did not want to fight and possibly die. This showed how the government was very strict back then and not very understanding of the citizen's wishes. This also shows how the government did not think things through clearly because if they offered the men a benefit for going into the war then they probably would have done it. But back then they had no benefits, it was just like an regular job. In the world today the military offers to pay for college for four years if you served in the military for a certain number of years.
Is this progress?
The draft dodgers showed progress in history because it let the government know that men did not want to go into the war. If men did not want to fight for their country then the country was not stable at that time. So the government has progressed and said that if men serve in the military for a certain number of years then they will get their college expenses fully paid for until they graduate. This is progress because the government saw how none of the men wanted to fight for their country and risk their lives until there was something in it that would benefit them.

The draft dodgers helped history lead to where it is today because now people who serve in the military get their college expenses free until they graduate. This was chosen by the government because they saw how the men did not want to get involved in the war unless there was something in it that would benefit them. The Vietnam War helped lead to today because with the United States having involvement in the war it led to the possible outcomes that we faced during the time. As history progresses the world shapes itself around history to accommodate the needs of history.
