Island in the bay of New York 1892-1943
What is it?
Ellis Island is an island in the bay of New York that immigrants from all around the wold came first arrived at when they came to America. Popular countries where immigrants came from were Italy, China, Russia, Poland, Germany, and Ireland. Reasons why some of these different cultural groups immigrated to America was because of international conflicts, disease, famines, natural disasters, dictatorship, and hostility. For other immigrants that wanted to immigrate to America was because of better job opportunities and financial opportunities.
When immigrants would come to America they would first see the statue of liberty which symbolized freedom and peace. Certain steps were taken before immigrants to come to America. First there was the passage, which was the travel for two weeks on a steamship in third class with 3,000 other people in an open area. There were no separate rooms and food supplies would not last long. The second step was the arrival when the immigrants saw the statue of liberty. Then they would wait for hours or days on a ferry until they were brought down to inspection. Next stop was at the baggage room where they would get their baggage and then move onto the registry room where there would be food and a concession stand. After they would go to the stairs of spearation when doctors would see sick people coming up the stairs and mark a letter on their jacket. There would be a six second medical exam and if you were ill then there would be a further inspection. There was a disease called Tricoma going around and doctors had to flip eyelids up to check. If you were found sick you would have to stay for weeks or months until you got better. The next step was the registry room when people got sent home if they had tricoma and women were not allowed into the room alone after WWII. If you were under 16 you would have to travel with a parent and could not work. Benches were installed in 1903. Next step was the medical exam when you would be marked with chalk. An "X" ment insanity and a "P" meant a lung problem. One out of every ten were sent home and only one percent were denied sick with disease. The legal inspection was next when 29 questions were asked about anything. Next was the detainees which was the island of tears. People lived in dorm rooms, hospital rooms or quarentine, and the board of health was formed. Next was the stairs of separation when people traveling northeast would go to the left and people traveling southwest went to the right, there would also be an office to exchange money. The last step was the kissing post when people would wait for loved ones. That is the process all immigrants had to go through to enter America.
Why is it important?

Leads to...
Ellis Island helped lead to the progressivism era because with all of the immigrants coming into America for new jobs there were children starting to work for lower wages and since more people wanted to work other working Americans recieved lower wages for longer hours of work. So in the progressivism era laws about child labor and work hours were made to make the lives of Americans better and happier.
