Fourteen Points
(Political)
1918
What is it?
The Fourteen Points are read by President Woodrow Wilson in his speech in January of 1918. Basis for a peace programe was created based on Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points. These points listed helped end WWI. The points are...
1.) No more secrete agreements ("Open covenants openly arrived at").
2.) Free navigation of all seas.
3.) An end to all economic barriers between countries.
4.) Countries to reduce weapon numbers.
5.) All decisions regarding the colonies should be impartial.
6.) The German Army is to be removed from Russia. Russia should be left to develop her own political set-up.
7.) Belgium should be independent like before the war.
8.) France should be fully liberated and allowed to recover Alsace-Lorraine.
9.) All Italians are to be allowed to live in Italy. Italy's borders are to "along clearly recognizable lines of nationality".
10.) Self-determination should be allowed for all those living in Austria-Hungary.
11.) Self-determination and guarantees of independence should be allowed the Balkan states.
12.) The Turkish people should be governed by the Turkish government. Non-Turks in the old Turkish empire should govern themselves.
13.) An independent Poland should be created which should have access to the sea.
14.) A League of Nations should be set up to guarantee the political and territorial independence of all states.
Why is it important?
The Fourteen Points are important because these statements under every one of the fourteen points helped end the war. All of these points made sure that every country fighting in the war or had something to do with the war got what they wanted. President Woodrow Wilson created these Fourteen Points because he wanted a peaceful end to the war and all of the countries liked the fourteen points because they got what they wanted in the end. Wilson used a clever method of peace writing to end WWI.
Is it progress?
The Fourteen Points are progress in history because after these points were said by President Woodrow Wilson the war came to an end. Progress was shown when all of the countries that were fighting in the war stopped and got what they wanted in a peaceful manner. When countries have stopped fighting a war, that symbolizes progress because the battle has either been resolved or a compromise has been made. In WWI both the battle resolution and a compromise was agreed upon which made all of the countries fighting happy.
Leading to...
World War I helps lead to the next era of the 1920's because after the war there was a lot of uproar against the government and a lot of rebellion from the traditional ways. So in the 1920's there was a new kind of music called the jazz age, girls had "short" skirts, and there were flappers. Since the first world war caused some unorganized lifestyle for Americans new ways of life started emerging from the people.
