Labor Laws
(Economic)
Late 1800's to Early 1900's
What is it?
Labor laws were laws made by the government to make the lives of Americans better. They focused on complaints made by workers and made laws for companies to follow so that there could be government control in the work environment. There was a lot of child labor going on in factories and mills. These were very dangerous places to work in, never mind have children work in. Children were hired to work in factories because they were small so they could fit into small places where machines needed to be fixed. They had small fingers too which often got caught in machinery. Some children lost limbs and others died due to the dangers working conditions. Another problem in the work environment was the long hours of work for a little amount of pay. Workers became unhappy that they worked a lot of hours and earned a very little income for their hard work. So this is when labor unions started arising. These unions focused on getting better working conditions for Americans and to abolish child labor until children were a certain age and mature enough to work. Labor laws made lives better for the working class of America.
Why is it important?
Labor laws were important because without these laws many dangerous and unfair situation would be going on. There could still be child labor going on at the age of five. This would be very dangerous for children because at such a young age they are still learning and do not always think about the safest ways to go about solving a problem. In the case of a broken machine most adults would not climb into one to fix the problem, they would usually call a professional. However children don't think about this and go right ahead without thinking twice about the situation and climb into the problem. Many children died working in factories and lost limbs and fingers. So with these laws children would not be exposed to the dangerous working conditions. Labor laws were also important because it made workers happy about their salary. If they worked long hours then their pay would be impacted by earning more money. Labor laws were important for a fair and safe work environment.
Is it a progress?
The labor laws are a progress in history because with these laws children are not exposed to dangerous working conditions and other workers are getting a pay that corresponds to the time and how hard their job is. Labor laws show progress when Americans are starting to be happy with work and when labor laws are making the work environment safe for every worker. Labor laws are made up by the government and the government's number one priority should always be about maintaining the safety of Americans.

Labor laws help lead to the next era of Imperialism because the Imperialism era is when the political officials start having power over the entire country to help benefit the lives of every citizen. So the labor laws relate to this because this is when the government makes up a set of laws about the work force and the entire country must follow these laws to make the lives better of every citizen. Lives of Americans have become safer and have a fair environment with the labor laws in progress.
