League of Nations
(Political)
What is it?
The League of Nations was an organization set up in Geneva, Switzerland that was meant to ensure that war never broke out again like it did in WWI. Switzerland was chosen because it was a neutral country that did not get involved in WWI. People saw the League of Nations as a symbol of stability because after the Treaty of Versailles turmoil broke out. President Woodrow Wilson suggested the idea for the League of Nations in his Fourteen Points speech. There would be a League's Assembly to solve disputes in a peaceful manner. These assemblies would be held in the League's Parliament and there the court would listen to the disputes. The League could introduce verbal sanctions which was a threat to the opposing country that they would need to leave the territory or else face the consequences. Later economic sanctions would be introduced if the country failed to oblige the League of Nations request. Economic Sanctions focused on making the country financially in trouble and leading toward bankruptcy. This was done so that the population of the country got mad at their government and force their government to accept the League's decision. If a country would not listen to the League's decision then they could banish trade with other countries and the other countries would obey the League of Nation's wishes. Physical sanctions could also be used by the League of Nation's but only against France and Britain because other countries did not have a military force set up. However these two countries were already in economic debt from WWI and could not afford to pay for their army. The League of Nations purpose was to do anything that would prevent a war from erupting.
Why is it important?
The League of Nations was important because they were the backbone to keeping peace in the world. They did anything that was required to make sure a war did not erupt between countries and used their political strength to do so. Power was shown in their Parliament when there would be a League's Assembly, verbal sanctions, economic sanctions, and physical sanctions. All of these tactics were used as a peaceful manner but had a twist to them. The League of Nations threatened the country that would not obey their decisions with these tactics. Some threats were military forced, cutting off the trade, making the country go bankrupt, and that the country would have to face the "unknown" consequences if they did not listen. Without the League of Nations then there would be war all over the world.
Is it a progress?
This shows a progress in history. Before there was the League of Nations then there was war and fighting with every country getting involved and picking allies. Now after the League of Nations has been set up then there were no wars erupting all around the world and this is why there is progress. Progress is when there is peace in the world and when there is no one fighting. This is what happened when the League of Nations was set up. There was peace and the government had control over the countries decisions about the war. It was a huge progress when Woodrow Wilson's idea of a League of Nations was set up because someone needed to keep the peace in the world.
Leading to...
The League of Nations could have led to the next era in history known as The Great Depression because of the economic debt that they could damage a country with. However the United States was not part of the League of Nations at this time because the new president Herbert Hoover did not believe that joining the League of Nations was in the best interest for the country, which was not true. Since Hoover showed such little interest for the well being of the country and the citizens the economy started to fall violently. The stock market would eventually crash on October 29th, 1929.
