The Discovery of Penicillin
(Intellectual)
What is it?In the 1920’s many medical advances were being invented. In 1928 the discovery of Penicillin as an antibiotic treatment was discovered by bacteriologist Alexander Fleming. During one of his many experiments he found a mold that had contaminated one of his experiments. Little did Fleming know was that this mold was very powerful in killing many harmful bacteria and used as an antibacterial agent.
After finding this mold by accident Alexander Fleming started a full investigation on this new “invention” that he thought would benefit society and help the lives of the people. Penicillin originated from a type of fungi known as Penicillium fungi in Latin. Also known as pen or PCN for abbreviation. Penicillin is most commonly used to fight off bacterial infections caused by Gram-positive organisms. Penicillin is predicted to be one of the most prescribed drugs by doctors for its fast reactive ingredient kill off harmful bacteria in major infections and diseases.
“Penicillins are all β-Lactam (Beta-Lactam) antibiotics, which are antibiotic molecules with a β-Lactam nucleus (MNT).” Which describes the Latin derivative. Some common drugs that penicillin is used in are ampicillin, amoxicillin, flucloxicillin, and phenoxymethylpenicillin. Originally penicillin was discovered in the late 19th century by Ernest Duchesne when he was a medical student. It wasn’t until 1928 however that Alexander Fleming discovered the bacterial properties of penicillin. During one of his experiments with the bacteria staphylococcus that he discovered when the penicillin mold was added the cells closest to the mold started dying. He came to the conclusion that penicillin has a characteristic as an antibiotic. Later testing discovered the the penicillin was created by the mold and not actually the mold itself. The penicillin works as a killing agent with our immune systems to fight and kill off harmful bacteria. Normally our immune systems can sense bad bacteria and send off white blood cells to fight off the bacteria. However when the bacteria are too strong for just the white blood cells there needs to be another agent in fighting off the bacteria. This is where the penicillin comes into play. Peptidoglycan synthesis is occurring rapidly in bacteria where they constantly rebuild their cell walls that help protect themselves and maintain their structure. The bacteria is killed when the penicillin damage and penetrate the cell walls as their primary function.
Penicillin may be a good antibacterial agent however antibacterologist Alexander Fleming fears that the bacteria penicillin is used to fight will make mutations in the cells to try and “out smart” the penicillin. He predicts that the bacteria could possibly make β-lactamase, which make a β-lactam ring in the cells. Further extensive predictions made by Fleming is that the penicillin could possibly kill this string of bacteria by adding penicillins with β-lactamase inhibitors. Research has been done and found that Alexander Felming's predictions were true. Fleming feared that with more use of this antibacterial medicine, the more the bacteria will make mutations and become resistant to the antibacterial agent. Alexander Fleming created Penicillin in 1928 and has saved many lives since then.
Why is it important?
The discovery of Penicillin is important because there are many people who are sick with bacterial infections. If there was no cure for the infections then the antibiotic would take over all of the cells in the body and the infected person could die. So when Alexander Fleming created the medicine of Penicillin he helped cure all of the sick people that had bacterial infections and prevented them from death. Without the invention of Penicillin then the bacteria would have spread from person to person and lead to an epidemic that could have killed thousands. Thanks to Alexander Fleming and his invention of Penicillin many people have been cured from bacterial infections and his finding in the science department have influenced other scientists to research medications that could cure disease, viruses, and plagues.
Is it Progress?
Yes the discovery of Penicillin is a progress in history. Without the invention of Penicillin then many Americans could have died. Since Alexander Fleming found the cure for bacterial infections this has made a progress in history. Progress is shown when the amount of people who were sick have decreased by thousands and how they are cured to this very day. Even though Penicillin was created in 1928, it is still used as a treatment for bacterial infections that are common in the world today. Alexander Fleming's finding of Penicillin have made history a progress from the past and is still continuing today to make history a progress.
Leading to...
The discovery of Penicillin helped lead history into the next era known as the Great Depression because there were a lot of people sick with bacterial infections and it wasn't until the Great Depression era when patients really started using this medicine to help cure their infections. Also before the Great Depression the popularity of the drug was not as common. But when people started losing their homes and had to live in the streets during the Great Depression, they became more exposed to the bacteria by living in close contact with other sick people. So the bacterial infections were at an ultimate high right now when there are families living in close living quarters with other families who have been exposed and carried the bacterial infection. Alexander Fleming's discovery of Penicillin helped lead into the Great Depression and it still has a purpose in the world toady.
