Muckrakers
(Social)
What is it?
Muckrakers is a group of journalists who investigated social conditions and political corruption. The term "Muckraker" was given to journalists in Theodore Roosevelt's speech. These journalists were like the muddy part of a lake. They chose to take the dirt and grime of society and shine light on it for everyone to see. Some topics that Muckrakers focused on were the beef industry, robber barons, and child labor. All of these examples have a bad part of society associated with them. In the beef industry the Muckrakers shined light on the poor quality of meat and the dangerous working conditions and let society see what the meat packing industries were really like. Muckrakers shined light on robber barons and how they were nasty and very greedy people in society and let all of the suffering and poor people in society see how the robber barons wealthy lives really were. Then for child labor the Muckrakers shined light on the dangerous working conditions that little children had to work in. The muckrakers focused on how children died in working environments and how some lost their limbs and fingers. After society saw these dangerous and horrible working conditions that children had to undergo they were all pretty much in agreement that child labor had to come to an end.
Why is it important?
The Muckrakers are important because without them then horrible situations might still be going on. Muckrakers were journalists who had the courage to tell the truth about society and try to make a change. These journalists influenced society and have shaped it from a dangerous, disgusting, and unfair society (child labor, beef industry, and robber barons), into a safe, proud, and equal society throughout the country. Without Muckrakers then light would have never shone through some of the worst parts about America.
Is this progress?
Muckrakers proved to be a progress in history. They helped move society from the outdated bad times, into the safer more updated society. Progress has been seen with Muckrakers when they improved the conditions of the meat and food for Americans. Progress in the areas of child labor and robber barons being abolished from society. Muckrakers have helped the world progress from the past into the future.
Leading to...
Muckrakers help lead to the next era of Imperialism because in Imperialism the government made the lives of Americans better by tackling the concerns and complaints of Americans and solving the problems. Muckrakers relate to this because they acted as a catalyst to move the issues of Americans faster to the government to solve by shining light down on all of the dirt and grime of society. Overall America has progressed into a better society with the help of Muckrakers.
