Richard Nixon
(Political)
Who is he?
In November of 1968 Richard Nixon became the president of the United States. He ran on a platform of "law and order", and he barely beat Hubert Humphrey for election. The popular vote was at 43.4 percent for Nixon and Humphrey had 42.7 percent. The third candidate George Wallace took the remaining percentage of the votes. In 1969 Nixon began the secret bombing of Cambodia. This was done in an effort to destroy Communist supply routes and base camps in Cambodia. the go-ahead for "Operation Breakfast" was given by Richard Nixon. Richard Nixon promised America that he would reduce the number of U.S. troops in the Vietnam War. Nixon pursued a plan when the U.S. gradually pulled away from war leave the South Vietnam army to take on the bulk of the fighting which was known as vietnamization. With Richard Nixon as president the U.S. number of troops in Vietnam remain high and the war traveled into the neighboring countries. The countries were Laos and Cambodia when Nixon told the U.S. troops to bomb the Ho Chi Minh trail. This was an attempt to cut off supplies to VC and bomb northern Vietnam camps. The impact this had on the country was protests at Kent State University in Ohio when four students died. President Nixon resigned in 1974 because of the watergate scandal.
Why is he important?
Richard Nixon is important because he was one of the presidents of the United States and he was the leader of the American Army during the Vietnam War. He is also the only president in history to give his resignation by choice. Nixon is responsible for many deaths in the war because when he was elected people voted for him because he promised that he would reduce the number of U.S. troops over in Vietnam. Well, Nixon did not do this and many more Americans died.
Does he show progress?
Richard Nixon does not show progress because he kept the war going on and having it involve the United States longer than he should have. He is responsible for the Kent State University outburst because he triggered the protests. No progress is shown because he was elected president under a lie. People voted for him because he said he would reduce the number of troops over in Vietnam and in reality he did not do that. So people became angry with him, and started to not trust the president. There can be no progress going on in a country when the citizens of the nation do not trust the president or believes what he says.
Leading to...
Richard Nixon helped lead history to where it is today because if he never resigned from president then the order of the presidents would of been out of the order they are in now. This is because if he continued to control the army in Vietnam and conditions were to get worse then the people of America might of elected a different ruler into history to fix the problem instead of who was followed by Richard Nixon. He has led history to where it is today because the country has learned from many of his war time mistakes and ever since then the United States use different war tactics that seem logical compared to Richard Nixon's violent attacks on Vietnam.
