The Second Red Scare
(Political)
What is it?
When WWII was ending and the Americans did not have to worry about the war they started worrying about the Soviet Union. The Americans feared that the spread of communism all over the world through the power of the Soviet Union. Communism was the idea that expansion would take place and spread through the revolution. The middle and upper classes became afraid that the working class would overthrow them. Americans feared that the Soviet Union would spread the communism through military power because the Soviet Union was occupying much of Eastern and Central Europe at the time. If communism was going to spread into the United States then the Americans feared that it could threaten the democratic values of their country. The federal government of the United States investigated government officials and found that they held loyalties to the communism ideology, so as a result those officials lost their jobs. Then it became clear that communism was being spread through the television and multimedia so the federal government had to investigate into that situation as well. Violations brought on by the Ohio Un-American Activities Committee helped Americans to not give their support in the American government and so the fear of the second red scare came to an end.
Why is it important?
The second red scare is important because it was fear that was throughout the entire country and perhaps even the world. Many countries feared that the Soviet Union would influence other countries with communism through military force to the governments had to come up with a way to prevent the Soviet Union from spreading their influence. This is important because when another country in the world threatens the government of another country then a war could break out. It is also important because it caused every American to fear the Soviet Union.
Is this progress?
The second red scare itself is not really a progress because when people are in fear of a government then that really does not show how a country is moving on and being prosperous. The progress that was seen in history that involves the second red scare is the governments actions toward the threat to Americans. When the government found out about the influence the Soviet Union was trying to have over the United States the federal government went and investigated the issue. Some government officials lost their job because they had ties to the communism ideology. When the federal government made sure that the Soviet Union was all done spreading their influence of communism over the United States the government had made progress for America.
Leading to...
The second red scare helps lead to the next era in history known as the civil rights movement in the 1960's because this red scare made the citizens of America be protected by the government. This has to do with the civil rights movement because this movement protected the rights of Americans just like how the federal government of the United States protected the Americans from the influence of communism from the Soviet Union.
