What are they?
When the first effects of the Great Depression began in 1929 soup kitchens started opening in America. Twelve million Americans were unemployed in 1932 which was about twenty-five percent of the working force. The government offered little to no relief to Americans so soup kitchens were ran by churches and private charities. Some soup kitchens served up to three thousand people a day like the one in southeast Detroit. The soup kitchens would not be successful if it were not for the volunteers that helped run the soup kitchens to benefit all Americans in need. The main food that soup kitchens served was soup and bread. Soup was very economical because depending on the amount of people that needed to be served, they could always add more water to the soup to be able to serve more people. The gangster from Chicago Al Capone started the first soup kitchen to help clear his name for all of the bad things that he did. Al Capone thought that by helping out the thousands of Americans could show the people that he wasn’t a shady guy. In every town and city there was a soup kitchen in America. This was important because it was an act of kindness that was projected to all Americans in need and in the world today there are still soup kitchens for homeless people or those in need, and there are still volunteers that spend their time helping out.
Why are they important?
The soup kitchens are important because they helped support the Americans that were in need of help. They fed the hungry during the bad economic times which was important so that people did not go around starving. If people did not eat then they could of died. This helped bring up the quality of life of people suffering during the Great Depression.
Do they show progress?
Soup kitchens do show progress because it shows how other people are offering their time and lives up so that other people can be happy. This helped show how Americans were unselfish during the time of need for other poor starving Americans. When people need help there is always a person out in the world that is willing to lend a hand to the needy. This show progress because when society starts to help each other live and survive then there is an upward turn to the world which would show progress from the social crisis the Great Depression took a toll onto the American citizens.
Leading to...
The soup kitchens could have possibly led to WWII because if other countries saw how the Americans were helping each other out and their countries were not helping out the people in need then they could of gotten mad. People could have been mad at their governments for not providing aide while the United States had a president all willing to give the aide that was necesarry to live in a peaceful and prosperous country. Also the rich people in America could of been unhappy about the soup kitchens because they could of thought that the government and other people were dumb in lending a hand to the needy and thought that they should use the money to help themselves survive. This was very selfish and could have caused disputes which could only add onto the fighting during the time of WWII.
